On October 23, 2024, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders and OADR-ORWH worked collaboratively to publish the Notice of Special Interest: Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease to promote research aimed at better understanding autoimmune inner ear disease, also known as autoimmune-associated sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
On August 27, 2024, OADR-ORWH hosted a ScienceTALKS session, “Going Viral: Exploring Viral Triggers of Autoimmune Diseases,” bringing together experts in the field to generate discussion and identify opportunities to advance research as it pertains to viral triggers of autoimmune diseases. On August 21-22, 2024, OADR-ORWH co-sponsored the “Impact of Diet on Mucosal Immunity and Immune-mediated Digestive Diseases Workshop” alongside the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Office of Nutrition Research. During the workshop, Dr. Shanmugam provided comments on institutional perspectives to support research on diet and immune-mediated digestive diseases. The ScienceTALKS series examines the state of the science in specific areas impacting research on autoimmune disease and women’s health. This session of ScienceTALKS focused on Xist research and brought together experts in the field to generate discussion and identify opportunities to advance Xist research as it pertains to autoimmune diseases. On March 26, 2024, “Introducing the Office of Autoimmune Disease Research,” a manuscript coauthored by OADR-ORWH Director Victoria Shanmugam, MBBS, MRCP, FACR, CCD, and ORWH Director Janine Austin Clayton, M.D., FARVO, was published in Arthritis & Rheumatology, the official journal of the American College of Rheumatology.
