Event Information

The 62nd  Meeting of the NIH Advisory Committee on Research on Women's Health (ACRWH) will provide a forum for ACRWH members to give advice and make recommendations on priority issues affecting women's health and sex differences research.

The NIH Revitalization Act of 1993 established the ACRWH, a Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) committee, to give advice and make recommendations on priority issues affecting women's health and sex differences research. ACRWH members are selected from among physicians, practitioners, scientists, and other health professionals who are not federal employees.

The ACRWH's responsibilities are to:

  • Advise the ORWH director on appropriate NIH research activities in women's health
  • Review the women's health research portfolio for NIH
  • Survey goals for scientific career development
  • Assess inclusion of women and minorities in NIH clinical research

Sheila P. Burke, M.P.A., R.N., FAAN, is the Senior Public Policy Advisor and Chair of the Government Relations and Policy Group at Baker Donelson. Ms. Burke is the Vice Chair of the Commonwealth Fund board of directors and a member of the board of directors of Abt Associates and Ascension Health Care. She previously served as an Adjunct Lecturer and Executive Dean at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Ms. Burke was also Chief of Staff to Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, served as Deputy Staff Director of the Senate Committee on Finance, and was the Secretary of the Senate, which is the Chief Administrative Officer of the U.S. Senate. She was a Commissioner on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission and Chair of the Kaiser Foundation Board. Early in her career, she was a staff nurse in California. Ms. Burke is a member of the National Academy of Medicine where she previously served as a member of its council and received the David Rall Award. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and member of the National Academy of Public Administration. Ms. Burke graduated from the University of San Francisco and Harvard University, and she has honorary degrees from Marymount University and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. She has served on several National Academies committees, most recently as Cochair of the Committee on the Review of Federal Policies That Contribute to Racial and Ethnic Health Inequities.

Susan Cheng, M.D., M.M.Sc., M.P.H., is the Erika J. Glazer Chair in Women’s Cardiovascular Health and Population Science, Director of the Institute for Research on Healthy Aging, Director of public health research, and Professor and Vice Chair of research in cardiology in the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Cheng is a clinician-scientist who leads research programs aimed at uncovering the drivers of cardiovascular aging in women and men. She has authored over 400 research manuscripts and her work has been supported by continuous NIH funding. Dr. Cheng has served on the editorial boards of major cardiovascular journals and on leadership committees for the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology. She is an elected councilor for the American Society for Clinical Investigation and elected member of the Association of University Cardiologists. Dr. Cheng received her A.B. from Harvard University, M.D. from McMaster University, M.M.Sc. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and M.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health. She completed internal medicine training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and cardiology fellowship training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Alina Salganicoff, Ph.D., is a Senior Vice President and the Director of Women’s Health Policy at KFF where her work focuses on health policies of importance to women throughout their lifespan, with an emphasis on coverage and access challenges facing women who are underserved and marginalized. Dr. Salganicoff has written and lectured extensively on the financing of and access to health services for women, with topics ranging from sexual and reproductive health to long-term care. She has served on numerous federal, state, and nonprofit advisory committees. She is also on the advisory panel of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Women’s Preventive Services Initiative, on Power to Decide’s Public Policy Advisory Group, and an Associate Editor of the peer-reviewed journal, Women’s Health Issues. Born in Argentina, Dr. Salganicoff is a native Spanish speaker. She holds a B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in health policy from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Salganicoff is a member of NASEM’s Standing Committee on Reproductive Health, Equity, and Society. She served on the Institute of Medicine’s committee that issued recommendations for women’s preventive services that are now covered under the Affordable Care Act, and she served on NASEM’s committees for abortion safety and quality, control and prevention of sexually transmitted infections, and women’s health research.

Crystal Edler Schiller, Ph.D., is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and tenured Associate Professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. She serves as Associate Director of the UNC Center for Women’s Mood Disorders and Director of the UNC School of Medicine Clinical Psychology Internship Program. She conducts an NIH-funded research program that focuses on sex steroid regulation of neural circuits and mood in women across the reproductive lifespan. Her research also aims to identify novel ways to expand access to evidence-based psychotherapy. Dr. Schiller completed predoctoral training in clinical psychology at the University of Iowa, T32-funded postdoctoral training in reproductive hormone-related mood disorders and affective neuroscience at UNC Chapel Hill, and a K23 career development award focused on the effects of estrogen on the neural reward system in perimenopause.
