In October 2021, ORWH hosted a forum titled “Effective Approaches to Fostering Faculty Gender Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Celebrating Progress” where winners of the NIH Prize for Enhancing Faculty Gender Diversity in Biomedical and Behavioral Science presented their achievements to sustain improvements in gender diversity within their academic institutions and communities. As a result, ORWH created the Prize Competition for Enhancing Faculty Gender Diversity: Toolkit to highlight the winners’ successful strategies and best practices so that their evidence-based approaches may be replicated and translated across additional biomedical and behavioral science departments, centers, and divisions.
The Toolkit contains dozens of winners’ gender diversity initiatives for users’ exploration and implementation in their own settings. Users of this Toolkit are encouraged to review multiple interventions and to adopt an approach of continual measurement, learning, and adaptation. To address issues identified at individual institutions, users are encouraged to construct a “bundle” of interventions to create more meaningful impacts. The Toolkit also allows users to search by using keyword(s) and filter by the following criteria and categories:
- College/university size
- Scale of intervention
- Type of intervention
- Target population of the intervention
The proven strategies for developing inclusive environments that are featured in the Toolkit serve as an invaluable resource for institutions and academic groups that seek to increase and sustain gender diversity and create a more inclusive environment for all.
