ORWH Celebrates Women’s Health Research Day and the Anniversary of Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV)

On January 25, 2024, ORWH celebrated the observance of Women’s Health Research Day, which recognizes the need to increase awareness of sex- and gender-based biomedical research. On this day, we also celebrated the eighth anniversary of the implementation of NIH’s Policy on Sex as a Biological Variable (SABV). During that time, ORWH has led and made remarkable achievements in women’s health research and has brought representation and inclusivity to the study of health for all people. Just last November, the White House and the Office of the First Lady announced the establishment of the Women’s Health Research Initiative, which aims to improve women’s health in the United States by accelerating research and fundamentally changing how we approach and fund women’s health research. ORWH is honored to serve alongside other NIH ICOs and various federal agencies and offices to transform the research landscape and close gaps to improve the health of women.

Leading up to Women’s Health Research Day, ORWH Director Janine Austin Clayton, M.D., FARVO, shared her insights into the current challenges and opportunities within women’s health during a Fireside Chat Congressional Briefing facilitated by Friends of ORWH. Dr. Clayton also discussed how we can better integrate SABV across the U.S. research enterprise.

Dr. Clayton also presented a keynote speech during the 2024 Precision Medicine World Conference in celebration of Women’s Health Research Day. The conference focused on sex differences in research, pregnancy and sex differences, the biology underlying sex differences, and systems and sex differences. Dr. Clayton was named a PMWC Luminary Award recipient during the conference for her efforts to advance women’s health through the promotion of research inclusion and the study of sex differences.

As we move through 2024, ORWH and Dr. Clayton encourage interested parties to join one of the many events focused on SABV and women’s health research.
