The website of NIH’s National Library of Medicine (NLM) recently created an online version of the awarding-winning exhibition “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians.” The exhibition features the work of physicians such as Vivian W. Pinn, M.D., the first full-time director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH); Elizabeth Blackwell, M.D., the first woman to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree from an American medical school; and Sharon Malotte, M.D., the first indigenous Nevadan to become a physician. The online exhibition provides a range of resources for educators and students, including lesson plans developed by classroom teachers for middle and high school classes, educational online activities, and career resources.

“Changing the Face of Medicine” began as a traveling exhibition in 2003 and was displayed in libraries and cultural centers across the United States until 2012. The exhibit received multiple awards. In 2009, the National Council on Public History presented cocurator Manon Parry with the Excellence in Consulting Award. In 2004, the American Association of Museums Media and Technology Committee presented a MUSE Award for the sphygmograph artifact interactive display. In 2003-2004, MomMD awarded a Spotlight Site of the Year award for the online exhibition.

Visiting Curator Ellen S. More published an article about her experiences helping to create the exhibit with NLM.
