The 59th meeting of the NIH Advisory Committee on Research on Women’s Health (ACRWH) will be held virtually on October 18, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EDT. The meeting will feature a presentation from Dr. Jon Lorsch, director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), on NIGMS’s role in supporting women’s health research. 

A panel discussion on the Women’s Health and the Institutional Development Awards (IDeA) States Programs will feature Dr. Tia Brodeur, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Indiana University School of Medicine; Dr. Emily Harville, associate professor at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine; and Dr. Emily Haozous, nurse and research scientist at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation – Southwest Center. 

The NIH Revitalization Act of 1993 established the ACRWH, a Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA) committee, to give advice and make recommendations on priority issues affecting women’s health and sex differences research. ACRWH members are selected from among physicians, practitioners, scientists, and other health professionals who are not federal employees. 

The ACRWH’s responsibilities are to: 

  • Advise the ORWH director on appropriate NIH research activities in women’s health 

  • Review the women’s health research portfolio for NIH 

  • Survey goals for scientific career development 

  • Assess inclusion of women and minorities in NIH clinical research
