There has been an alarming increase in the number of Americans who are experiencing homelessness and difficulty affording housing, which leads to frequent housing changes. Housing instability is classified as a public health challenge due to the wide range of health impacts and health disparities associated with it.

In collaboration with the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), Office of Disease Prevention, and Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, ORWH has released a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to support research that advances health equity through the development, testing, and evaluation of interventions that prevent and address housing instability. Applications should develop, test, and/or evaluate the impact of a housing intervention on both health and a housing outcome(s). This NOFO requires a Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP) that will be assessed as part of the scientific and technical peer review evaluation. Applications that fail to include a PEDP will be considered incomplete and withdrawn.

NINR is specifically interested in applications that focus on social determinants of health interventions that modify housing opportunities and/or interventions that address the social risk of housing instability by addressing individual and/or interpersonal-level housing needs.

NINR will hold a Pre-Application Webinar for prospective applicants on Friday, October 25, from 1–2 pm EDT. During the webinar, NIH staff will provide an overview of the funding opportunity and answer questions from potential applicants.

The NOFO expires December 14, 2024
