Exciting news for researchers seeking funding opportunities related to women’s health research—ORWH has announced a new funding opportunity to address health disparities among groups of women in the U.S. that are underrepresented, underserved, and underreported in biomedical research.

The Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) on the Health of Women of Underrepresented, Underserved, and Underreported (U3) Populations aims to support biomedical research that addresses health disparities across the lifespan among U3 women in the United States. This NOSI encourages rigorous, collaborative, interdisciplinary research on women’s health examining the differential risk, treatment outcomes, and morbidity experienced by populations with health disparities. Thoughtful incorporation of intersectionality and culturally and contextually relevant approaches into research by applying the NIMHD Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework to meet group- and population-level needs is encouraged. Partnership between early career and independent investigators is encouraged to strengthen and accelerate multidisciplinary research in this space.

The NOSI expires on January 23, 2026.

ORWH has a longstanding commitment to improving the health of U3 women and to increasing awareness of the ways that social and structural drivers perpetuate health disparities. The recently published Health of Women of U3 Populations Data Book 2024 describes how socially determined categories and environments, systems, and policies intersect and result in different health outcomes for U3 women and communities in the United States. The statistics described in this publication highlight the importance of considering this intersectionality when researching the health of women.
