Black woman with an HIV ribbonOn August 19, 2021, ORWH will host the next installment of the Understudied, Underrepresented, and Underreported (U3) Women’s Health Lecture Series, titled “Targeted Strategies to Address Gender Disparities in Care Utilization for HIV as a Chronic Condition.” The webinar will feature presentations by two panelists, Grace M. Aldrovandi, M.D., of the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital and Susan E. Cohn, M.D., M.P.H., of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, followed by a Q&A session.

Historically, women and minority populations have been underrepresented in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) clinical trials, making it challenging to identify gaps and tailor HIV prevention and treatment to their unique health and reproductive needs. The webinar will provide a historical perspective on HIV/AIDS over the past four decades, highlight some of the pivotal advances that have shaped our current understanding of the HIV pandemic, and provide recommendations for enhancing participation of women and minorities in HIV clinical research. The lecture will also discuss sex differences in the microbiome and the role of the microbiome in health and infectious disease.
