Office of Research on Women’s Health

The Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) promotes women’s health and sex differences research within and beyond the NIH scientific community. ORWH establishes the NIH research agenda for women’s health, co-funds research projects in partnership with NIH Institutes and Centers, and supports career development for early-stage scientists focused on women’s health research.

ORWH was created in 1990 within the Office of the NIH Director to ensure that the NIH policy to include women and minorities in clinical research and to promote and support research on women’s health is followed. ORWH:

  1. Pioneered and continues to promote an interdisciplinary approach to women’s health research
  2. Developed and continues to lead initiatives to advance women in biomedical careers
  3. Encourages analyses and reporting of sex differences and similarities in basic science research; and
  4. Disseminates women’s health research information to scientists and to the public.
