Mariela Shirley, Ph.D.

Mariela C. Shirley, Ph.D., joined the ORWH in 2013 from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). At NIAAA, Dr. Shirley managed a portfolio of research, training, conference and education grants in various topic areas including screening and brief interventions, psychiatric comorbidities, and underage and college drinking, in addition to serving as the co-Chair of the NIAAA Alcohol Research Centers and Training Team.
Dr. Shirley is a licensed psychologist with broad interests in population-based studies of comorbidity of alcohol, other drug, and psychiatric disorders, screening and brief intervention for substance abuse/dependence, epidemiology and prevention of underage drinking, cognitive behavior therapy, psychological assessment, and behavioral medicine. She has experience as a clinical psychologist, a principle investigator and as an extramural program director.
She has received numerous awards for outstanding service, including a Meritorious Research Service Commendation from the American Psychological Association.
