Susan Persons, M.A.

Chief of Staff

Ms. Susan M. Persons, M.A., joined ORWH in 2012 to serve as Chief of Staff on detail from the Immediate Office of the Director, NIH. She holds an M.A. in Public Policy with a concentration in women’s studies from The George Washington University. Over the past 20 years Ms. Persons has been an advocate for science in the legislative and executive branches of government, as well as the public sector. She began her career in Washington as a Women’s Research and Education Institute (WREI) Congressional Fellow. Following completion of the WREI Fellowship, she joined the permanent staff of Congressman Bill Green, then a member of the House appropriations subcommittee that funds NIH. At the conclusion of her Hill tenure, she was hired by the Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA) as Associate Director for Government Affairs, where, as a registered lobbyist, she advocated for increased funding for NIH and the National Science Foundation, and founded a coalition of national behavioral and social science organizations to advocate for behavioral and social science research. Following her position with COSSA, she became Director of Government Relations for the American Psychological Society; directed the legislative and federal agency efforts of that 16,000 member organization; and chaired the Friends of NICHD. Since joining NIH in 1997, Ms. Persons has served as a Public Policy Liaison Officer in the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, an Office of Legislative Policy and Analysis Congressional Liaison; a Special Assistant to the NCI Director; a Special Assistant to NIH Deputy Director Raynard Kington; and the Assistant Director for Coordination in the Immediate Office of the Director, NIH, reporting to Directors Dr. Elias Zerhouni and Dr. Francis Collins.
